## HTML
muted Attribute The `muted` attribute is a boolean attribute used within the HTML `
` element. When present, it specifies that the audio output of the video should be silenced (muted) by default when the page loads. --- ## Definition and Usage * **Type:** Boolean attribute. * **Purpose:** Sets or returns whether the audio/video output should be muted. * **Default Behavior:** If the `muted` attribute is omitted, the video will play with its default audio track enabled (unmuted), provided the browser's autoplay policies allow it. ### Modern Browser Autoplay Policies In modern web development, the `muted` attribute is highly critical. Most modern browsers (such as Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox) block videos from autoplaying with sound to prevent a disruptive user experience. If you want a video to play automatically using the `autoplay` attribute, you **must** pair it with the `muted` attribute: ```html
``` --- ## Syntax ### HTML5 Standard Syntax In standard HTML5, you can write the attribute as a minimized boolean: ```html
``` ### XHTML Syntax In XHTML, attribute minimization is not allowed. The attribute must be fully defined with its value: ```html
``` --- ## Code Examples ### Example 1: Muted Video with Controls This example renders a video player that is muted by default. Users can manually unmute the video using the player's volume controls. ```html
Your browser does not support the video tag.
``` ### Example 2: Programmatic Control with JavaScript You can dynamically mute or unmute a video element using JavaScript by accessing the `muted` property of the `HTMLVideoElement` object. ```html
Your browser does not support the video tag.
Toggle Mute
``` --- ## Browser Support The `muted` attribute is widely supported across all modern desktop and mobile browsers: | Browser | Supported Version | | :--- | :--- | | **Google Chrome** | Yes | | **Mozilla Firefox** | Yes | | **Apple Safari** | Safari 6.0 and later | | **Opera** | Yes | | **Internet Explorer** | IE 10 and later (IE 9 and earlier do not support `muted`) | | **Microsoft Edge** | Yes | --- ## Key Differences and Standards * **HTML 4.01 vs. HTML5:** The `
` tag and its `muted` attribute are new features introduced in HTML5. They do not exist in HTML 4.01. * **HTML vs. XHTML:** In XHTML, you must write `muted="muted"`. In HTML5, simply writing `muted` is the standard and preferred approach.
