## jQuery `:enabled` Selector The jQuery `:enabled` selector is a pseudo-class selector used to target and select all form elements that are currently enabled. By default, all HTML form elements (such as `
`, `
`, `
`, and `
`) are enabled unless they have the `disabled` attribute explicitly applied to them. --- ## Syntax ```javascript $(":enabled") ``` ### Usage Notes * This selector is typically used on form controls. * To improve performance when querying the DOM, it is highly recommended to precede the pseudo-class with a tag name or another selector (for example, `$("input:enabled")` instead of just `$(":enabled")`). Otherwise, the universal selector `*` is implied. --- ## Code Examples ### Example 1: Basic Usage The following example demonstrates how to select all enabled input elements and change their background color to yellow. ```html
Name:
Password:
ID Code (Disabled):
``` ### Example 2: Dynamic Form Interaction You can also use the `:enabled` selector to dynamically count or manipulate active form elements when a user interacts with the page. ```javascript // Count the number of enabled inputs in a form var enabledCount = $("form input:enabled").length; console.log("There are " + enabledCount + " active input fields."); ``` --- ## Considerations & Best Practices 1. **Performance Optimization**: Using `$(":enabled")` without a prefix forces jQuery to traverse every single element in the DOM. For optimal performance, always scope the selector by prefixing it with a tag name or class: ```javascript // Preferred approach $("input:enabled, select:enabled, textarea:enabled") // Avoid if possible $(":enabled") ``` 2. **Compatibility with Modern CSS**: In modern web development, you can achieve similar styling results using native CSS without JavaScript: ```css input:enabled { background-color: yellow; } ``` Use the jQuery `:enabled` selector when you need to perform dynamic behavioral logic, event binding, or complex DOM manipulations that CSS alone cannot handle.
